Work out what a trip or your yearly driving costs in fuel, from distance, MPG and gas price.
| Input | Result |
|---|---|
| 300 mi, 32 MPG, $3.60/gal | $33.75 (9.4 gal) |
| 30 mi daily commute, 25 MPG, $3.40, 250 days | $1,020 per year |
| 1,000 mi road trip, 40 MPG, $3.80 | $95.00 |
Fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, then refill and divide the miles driven by the gallons added. One tank can mislead — average over 2–3 tanks for a trustworthy figure.
Aerodynamic drag rises with the square of speed; many cars lose 10–20% MPG going from 60 to 75 mph. On a 300-mile trip at 32 MPG that is roughly $4–7 of extra fuel each way.
Only if the engine is designed for it. In a car tuned for regular, premium adds power/efficiency gains too small to pay back its price premium — the owner's manual is the deciding source.
