Convert any number of steps to miles and kilometres using your stride length. Formula, table and worked examples.
| Input | Result |
|---|---|
| 10,000 steps, 26.4 in stride | 4.17 miles (6.71 km) |
| 1,000 steps, 30 in stride | 0.47 miles (0.76 km) |
| 5,000 steps, 24 in stride | 1.89 miles (3.05 km) |
It depends on your stride. At an average walking stride of 26.4 inches (women) it takes about 2,400 steps to walk a mile; at 30 inches (men) about 2,112. Shorter strides mean more steps per mile.
A quick estimate: your height in inches × 0.414. A 5'6″ (66 in) person has a stride of roughly 27 inches. For a precise number, walk 10 known steps and measure the distance.
10,000 steps is roughly 4–5 miles of walking. It became popular from a 1960s Japanese marketing campaign, but research supports that 7,000–8,000 steps already brings most of the health benefit.
