Time Average Calculator — Mean of Times

Average a list of times or durations in h:mm:ss or h:mm format — lap times, shift lengths, sleep logs.

—

Formula

Convert every time to seconds, take the arithmetic mean, convert back to h:mm:ss. Averaging times of day (like 7:30 and 8:00) treats them as durations since midnight — correct for lap times, shift lengths and sleep-duration logs.

Examples

InputResult
7:32, 8:05, 7:48, 7:55average 7:50:00
1:25:30, 1:22:10, 1:28:05 (3 laps)average 1:25:15
23:30, 0:10 (跨午夜两晚入睡)average 11:50:00 of 24h clock — see FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you average times?

Times cannot be averaged directly because of the 60-based clock. Convert each to seconds, average the seconds, then convert back — which is exactly what this calculator does.

Can I mix h:mm and h:mm:ss?

Yes — entries with two fields are read as hours:minutes, three fields as hours:minutes:seconds, and any mix is fine.

What about times across midnight?

Averaging 23:30 and 00:10 as clock times gives 11:50, which is meaningless for bedtimes. For sleep schedules, enter durations instead (e.g. hours slept 6:45, 7:20) or offset the evening times past 24:00 (23:30 as 23.5 h, 00:10 as 24:10).
