Estimate theobromine dose (mg/kg) from dog weight, chocolate type and amount — with the vet-published mild/moderate/severe thresholds.
| Input | Result |
|---|---|
| 25-lb dog, 2 oz milk chocolate | ≈9.7 mg/kg — below thresholds, monitor |
| 20-lb dog, 1 oz dark chocolate | ≈15.4 mg/kg — mild range |
| 10-lb dog, 1 oz baking chocolate | ≈88 mg/kg — emergency |
It depends on the type. Theobromine is the toxin: milk chocolate has ≈55 mg/oz, dark ≈140, baking chocolate ≈400. Mild signs start around 20 mg/kg of body weight — about 1 oz of milk chocolate per 1 lb of dog, but only 0.05 oz of baking chocolate per lb.
Vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, rapid breathing, increased thirst and urination, racing heart — typically appearing 6–12 hours after eating. High doses cause muscle tremors, seizures and heart rhythm problems.
Note the type and amount, weigh your dog, and call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435, a fee may apply) with those numbers. This calculator is an estimate, not a diagnosis — when in doubt, treat it as urgent; early decontamination works best.
